Holidays Don't Have to be Stressful
It’s easy to get frustrated, overwhelmed or lonely during the holidays. Obligations – or lack thereof – can increase stress or trigger depression symptoms. However, there are steps you can take to help make the holidays a little more relaxing and joyful.
1. Plan ahead. Mark dates on your calendar for tasks such as shopping, wrapping, baking, and sending cards. Make sure your list is doable, and you leave yourself time to rest.
2. See the light. Many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder when daylight hours are shorter. Try to walk each day during daylight hours, or use a full-spectrum lamp for 20 minutes a day.
3. Set a budget and stick to it. Remember that the cost of the gift does not define the value of a relationship.
4. Don’t overeat and under-exercise. It’s tempting to think that you’re too busy to exercise, and it’s really tempting to overindulge at holiday parties. Extra fats and sweets can lower your physical and emotional energy levels.
5.. Own your feelings. You may feel the recent loss of a loved one, a relationship or a job more acutely during the holiday season. Resist the pressure to be constantly happy just because it’s the holidays.
6. Get help if you need it. Depression rates increase during the holidays, but help is available. Find an in-network doctor.
